About the Project
The State of Democracy project, generously funded by the Joyce Foundation, brings together citizens, organizations and elected officials throughout the state of Minnesota to assess and improve the health of the democracy in our state.
We seek to:
- Raise public awareness of the state of democracy in Minnesota
- Analyze threats and safeguards to the system
- Develop and implement strategies and recommendations to ensure citizen confidence in the integrity of Minnesota's democratic institutions
- Foster communication between organizations, citizens and elected officials on the reform agenda

Collaborate and assist in capacity building among groups working on various aspects of the democracy agenda
League of Women Votesr Minnesota: Grassroots leaders since 1919
League of Women Voters Minnesota is a non-partisan grassroots political organization that encourages the informed and active participation in government through public education forums, non-partisan election activities and community outreach. LWVMN influences public policy based upon our member-directed positions through community activism and education and advocacy at the state, local and municipal level. LWVMN also seeks reform of Minnesota’s political institutions based upon basic principles of transparency and fundamental human rights.League of Women Voters of Minnesota Education Fund (LWVMNEF) was organized in 1983 to carry out the educational programs of the League of Women Voters of Minnesota.
LWVMNEF:
- provides information to the public on important public policy issues through forums and well researched studies;
- serves Minnesota voters by sponsoring candidate debates, organizing voter registration and get-out-the-vote drives, and publishing voter guides;
- informs the public about how government works through publications and conferences.
